I get the feeling that this time on the calendar is the "calm before the storm" as far as news goes around the village. It seems as if everyone is lying low until the whirlwind of holiday activities begins.
Everyone is gearing up for Thanksgiving. They are checking the grocery ads, checking invitation lists and getting their homes in tip-top shape for company.
Many villagers are also cleaning up the pine needles and leaves out of the yards. Tonto Village has had frost on and off this past week so the leaves have come tumbling down all over the yards. One word of caution: If you intend to burn those leaves, call the Forest Service, and let them know when you will be burning and for how long. The lookout at Diamond Point will see the smoke and if they don't know about your burning, they will assume that it is a fire.
The Forest Service phone number is (928) 474-7900. There will not be anyone at that number on weekends, so you are advised to call your local fire chief and let him know your intentions. In our area, the phone number is (928) 478-4575.
Joe and Judie Desrochers are the new owners of the home on lot 176, in Tonto Village III, the former Brown home. They have both retired after successful careers elsewhere and have picked our little community to settle into in their twilight years. Unfortunately, Judie took a fall on her icy stairs and broke her foot. We all wish you a speedy recovery, Judie, and we want to welcome you and Joe to our village.
Belated birthday greetings to Darlane Leonard. of Tonto Village III. Darlane celebrated her birthday Oct. 30. Happy belated birthday wishes to you, Darlane, I apologize for not remembering to add your big day to the column.
Phyllis Mullen has proven to be a formidable opponent with her pool cue. Phyllis has taken first place in the ladies pool tournament this past Tuesday evening at the Double D. Ethel Cain and Michelle Grundy shot those balls well enough to come in second and third. Regretfully, one of the gals who plays with the group will be leaving. Candy Hart has decided to move closer to her family in Buffalo, N.Y. Candy, are you sure about this move? It is really cold there --ou may get snowed in for days!
There will be a special get together for Candy at the Double D at 7 p.m., Nov. 23. Come by and wish her well.
This past Sunday, an open pool tournament was held at the Double D. Winners were Bo Douglas, Phyllis Mullen and James Miller. Congratulations to all the pool winners.
Tonto Village Fire District
Chief J.R. Alliger wants to remind all villagers to pick up their new street signs from the fire house. There are still quite a number of them that have not been picked up. Call the fire station any day, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at (928) 478-4575. The chief will have your numbers ready for you.
There will be a fire board meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at the fire station board room. The new board members, Gloria Alliger and Gayle Fitch, will be there to introduce themselves to everyone. The official documents have not yet arrived from Dixie Mundy on the elections board in Globe, so they will not be sworn in yet, but they will be on hand to meet everyone.
