Norman Leroy Barnes, 75, died Nov. 11, 2004. He was born Dec. 27, 1928 in Norfolk, Va.
He was a graduate of the College of William & Mary, with a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Mr. Barnes retired from the U.S. Army in July 1979 as a colonel. He served in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. Among his many military honors, he received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He then proceeded to have two successful careers before finally retiring to Pine in 1988 and then moving to Payson in 1992.
Mr. Barnes had been involved in many volunteer organizations since retirement, including president of the Zane Grey Shrine Club; former lieutenant governor of the Zane Grey Kiwanis Club; the Payson Masonic Lodge #70; the Elks Lodge; the American Legion; and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by Jeanne, his wife of 54 years; three daughters, Jan (Jack) Laufer, Dana (Ken) Moore, and Nancy (Scott) Solomon; and four grandchildren, Linda and Michael Laufer, Jennifer Beals and Brian Moore.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Church of the Holy Nativity Anglican located at 1414 N. Easy St. in Payson. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27.
