Cluff, Jones Take Turkey Trot Titles

A pair of long-distance runners with Payson High School cross country and track ties ran to first place at the Turkey Trot 5K run Saturday at Green Valley Park.

In the men's competition, David Cluff, a Horn cross country team member last fall, took first in 17:18. Cluff was entered in the 13-19-years age group.

Among the women, former Lady Longhorn running sensation Rachelle Jones was first in 20:35.00. Jones, now a Northern Arizona University student, was participating in the 20-29-years-age group.

Four men's competitors all toured the course in less than 18 minutes. In addition to Cluff, Tanner Morgan (17:28), Carlon Pontious (17:33) and Carlos Lopez (17:47) were the leaders. Pontious and Lopez ran for the PHS team last fall. Morgan was an Arizona Coaches Association cross country all-star two years ago.

Among the women entered in the Turkey Trot 5K, former Lady Horn runner Rachelle Jones was first in 20:35.00.

The toughest competition for Jones came from Julia Cluff who was timed in 22:57.

A total of 92 runners competed in the Turkey Trot.

"Everybody had a good time and no one got hurt," director Darlene Pierman said.
