Comedy Contest Wraps Up At Casino Saturday

The year's best stand-up comedians will compete for the honor of "Funniest Person of the Year" and a $500 cash prize at 8 p.m Saturday at Mazatzal Casino.

The competition features the best comics from the casino's "Thursty Thursday Comedy Hour" over the past year. Jimmy Danelli, host of the regular events, also will be the host Saturday evening.

"Out of all those who performed, I've invited the audience's favorites up to compete for $500," Danelli said. "It's the culmination of all the comics who have performed at the ‘Thursty Thursday Comedy Hour,' and the audience will vote for the winner."

Danelli, who will open the show with a monologue of his own, has appeared on more than 40 television shows, including "Ellen," "Welcome Back Kotter," and "The Good Life." He won an Emmy for a segment he wrote for Disney's "Winnie the Pooh."

"I wrote the show of the year, which was ‘Ground Piglet Day,' in 1990," Danelli said.

Comedy, he said, is good therapy.

"Every Thursday when I walk into Mazatzal Casino, I'm approached by people who will not miss it," he said, "because it's the one night of the week they can forget about their problems and have a few laughs."

Admission is free and a large, non-smoking section will be available.
