Mesa Woman Dies In Car-Motorcycle Accident

A Mesa woman was killed Sunday afternoon when a car struck the motorcycle she was driving on Highway 87 at Houston Mesa Road.

Sarah Alice Cunningham, 50, was driving northbound when a passenger car made a left turn onto Highway 87 and struck her motorcycle. Cunningham was wearing a helmet but it came off on impact, Payson Police Lt. Don Engler said.

"Somewhere between the initial impact and when she struck the ground, that helmet came loose and had actually come off of her," Engler said.

Engler said Cunningham was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to Payson Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

"There will be an autopsy," Engler said. "She appeared to have some head injuries, but we suspect she had some other internal injuries as well. She went clear over the vehicle that struck her."

Engler said the accident is still under investigation.

"There were no indications of alcohol on either party," Engler said. "We haven't filed any criminal charges at this point."
