Trunk or Treat

Don't miss this year's Trunk-or-Treat, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 30. Payson Parks and Recreation provides the candy for costumed volunteers to distribute from their vehicles. We still need volunteers. If you'd like to be a part of this year's festivities, call parks and rec at (928) 474-5242, ext. 272. This event will take place at Green Valley Park in the parks and rec parking lot. Admission is free.

Turkey Trot 5K Run

A pleasant 3.1-mile fitness run beginning and finishing at Green Valley Park amphitheater. The race will start at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004. Registration runs until Nov. 12. Late registration will only be accepted the day of the race. All pre-registered participants will receive a souvenir race shirt. The entry fee is $15 per person prior to Nov. 12 or $20 per person on the day of the race. Overall winners will receive free turkeys.

Rim Country Holiday Celebration and Main Street/APS Electric Light Parade

Get into the holiday spirit with a community Holiday celebration, a free event, Dec. 4, 2004. This event will begin with a visit from Santa from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Children can put in their requests and have their pictures taken free with Santa in the Julia Randall Rock Gym. While pictures are being taken, raffles and free prizes will be given away to children 12 and under. Hot dogs, hot chocolate, cookies, and coffee will be provided by the Knights of Columbus. Immediately after the children's visit with Santa, venture onto Main Street to watch all the lighted floats in the annual Main Street/APS Electric Light Parade at 6 p.m. Don't miss the grand finale -- join us for the tree lighting and fireworks. Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"

A classic story of Scrooge's transformation from a grudging miser to a generous man has become a holiday ritual. This traditional version is "entertaining, captivating and touching" and promises to be an inspiration to all. The show will take place at Hale Centre Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at 3 p.m. The bus will depart parks and rec at 12:30 p.m. The tour will stop for dinner at Joe's Real BBQ before returning home. Trip is limited to the first 48 who register. The cost is $40 per person, which includes transportation and show ticket. Registration deadline is Nov. 17.

Women's and men's volleyball

Registration for women's and men's volleyball leagues will be Nov. 1 to 24. Competitive and recreational divisions will be offered, with a four-team minimum for both divisions. Entry fee is $175 per team and includes an end-of-season tournament. Season begins early December.

Youth basketball

Participation fee for youth basketball is $20 per child. Registration information is as follows: third and fourth grades, Nov. 22 to Dec. 15, games begin Jan. 8, 2005; fifth and sixth grades, Dec. 27 to Jan. 19, 2005, games begin Feb. 19.

Those who register after the deadline for their age group will be placed on teams as space permits. Registration fee includes T-shirt, a minimum of 10 games, and an end-of-the season pizza party..
