J.R. and Debbie Weathersby started Lightning Transportation in March. The taxi service features this luxury van, plus a sedan. Their fleet will include a small limousine within the next two weeks. The couple pride themselves on not making clients wait more than 15 minutes, providing reasonable rates, and offering service throughout the state.

J.R. and Debbie Weathersby, residents of the Rim country for 17 years, started the business this March.

"I previously worked for another taxi service and have driven more than a million miles," J.R. said. "I have managed transportation companies for 21 years."

The couple started Lightning Transportation because they saw a need for a service-oriented transportation business. The company features two vehicles: a luxury passenger van and a sedan. And a small limousine is being added to the fleet within two weeks, J.R. said.

"Everything is fully-licensed and insured," he said.

Debbie said when a client calls, they will have a wait of only five to 15 minutes before the taxi arrives.

The cost is comparable to the rates charged to use the Senior Citizens Center transportation service, J.R. said. For instance, a trip from Alpine Heights to Bashas' would be less than $5.

A trip to Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix is $75; to the Payson Airport is between $6.50 and $8.50, Debbie said.

"We're located right in the middle of town," J.R. said. "Our motto is ‘We won't leave you stranded.'"

Lightning Transportation offers group runs to Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde and will do the same for ski groups interested in going to Sunrise in the White Mountains or the Arizona Snow Bowl in Flagstaff.

He said the most frequent destination outside the Rim country is Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix.

The people are the best part of doing business in Payson and the Rim country, Debbie said.

Lightning Transportation's hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 3 a.m., Friday and Saturday. The out-of-town shuttle is available daily.

For more information or to arrange a ride, call Lightning Transportation at (928) 474-3595. Service will be provided throughout the state.
