The foursome of Brenda Baker, Jan Burns, Ethel Hull and Laura Meyocks captured the championship of a Joker's Wild tournament of the Payson Women's Golf Association.
The fray was played Aug. 24 at Payson Golf Course.
PWGA member Alesha Calderwood explained the format of the tournament as one in which each player was assigned one of four suits from a decks of cards --iamonds, spades, hearts, clubs. On each hole, two net scores -- one designed suit and a wild card -- were tallied.
After each hole was played, the designated suit for it was tallied along with the wild card or lowest net score, from the remaining three suits.
Second-place honors were garnered by Joyce Karnes, Gerry Quisenberry, Sharon Vaplon and Billie Gibbs.
In addition to Vaplon being a member of the silver medal team, she also picked up closest-to-the-pin prize money on No. 5 where her tee shot rolled to within 8 feet, 7 inches of the flag. Mary Cain was closest on No. 17 with an effort that left her 11 feet, 8 inches short of the flag.
