Equestrians from Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico spent the weekend at the Payson Event Center for a Mounted Shooters of America competition.
In the contest, riders are armed with two single-action, .45-caliber pistols, and must ride different patterns while shooting at balloon targets.
"It sounds and appears like a real gun shot, but there's no projectile," said Daria Hobbs, national spokesperson for the Mounted Shooters of America.
Hobbs co-produced the event with her husband, Doug.
The winning shooter was Dianna Olson from Mirana, Ariz., She rode Splash, a leopard Appaloosa.
At right, novice shooter Suzie Montgomery tours the course on Freckles, her quarter horse.
The Hobbs enjoyed the Rim country so much, they've already booked the event center for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day of 2005.
