The following events and activities are available from the Payson Parks and Recreation Department:

Riding into fall

The town will be hosting barrel and pole bending activities at the Payson Event Center during the months of September and October. It kicked off Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m. (registration starts at 5:30 p.m.). It will begin with barrel racing and will alternate between barrel racing and pole bending every other Wednesday. Time only barrels will be offered at the end of the evening every Wednesday for those who want to stay and work their horse. The cost is $5 per run in the competition event and $3 for time only.

Kartchner Caverns

Experience "The Big Room" at one of Arizona's most unusual state parks on Oct. 27, 2004. Tour a living limestone cave featuring dynamic structures such as stalactites, stalagmites, and other unusual formations. The Big Room tour is a longer and more physically challenging tour at one-half mile in length and it takes approximately 1 3/4 hours to complete. The cost for the day trip is $60 per person that includes the motor coach and park entrance fee. Tour is limited to 43 participants. Registration deadline is Sept. 24.

Flag football

This program is for boys and girls, ages 6 to 14. It provides an opportunity for children to become involved in football by developing the first phase of player and coach development by teaching football skills. The cost is $25 per child. Games begin in early October and will run for about four weeks. Registration runs through Sept. 10. Late registration will not be accepted.

Adult co-ed volleyball

Registration for adult co-ed volleyball runs until Sept. 22. Competitive and recreation divisions will be offered, with a four-team minimum for both divisions. Entry fee is $175 per team and includes an end-of-season tournament. Games begin Oct. 4.

3-on-3 hoop tournament

Join the town of Payson in celebrating the recently completed basketball courts in Rumsey Park on Sept. 11 by entering your team in this tournament. The cost is $30. The deadline for registration is Friday Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. The divisions for the tournament are as follows: third through fifth grade, middle school, high school and open. 4-on-4 co-ed volleyball tournament

Enter your team of four in the co-ed beach volleyball tournament Sept. 11 at the brand new sand volleyball courts in Rumsey Park. The cost is $40. The deadline for registration is Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. All players must be 16 years of age or older and one female must be on the court at all times. Roster size is limited to five players. Home run derby

Enter your men's or women's team of three in the home run derby for $25 by Friday, Sept. 10. All players 16 years of age and older are invited to participate in this event sponsored by Mazatzal Casino. Tournament will take place at Rumsey II ball field starting at noon on Sunday, Sept. 12. Each team will be playing for a local non-profit organization of their choice. All players will receive a T-shirt and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each division.
