George Copp, Jr., 85, died Sept. 9, 2004 in Payson. Mr. Copp was born July 6, 1919 in San Antonio, Texas.

He was raised and educated in Long Beach, Calif. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Dorthea Downey in March 1941.

In 1941, after a short term at UCLA, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and graduated in the first class of Air Force Cadets from Yale University in May of 1943.

Thereafter, and for the duration, he served as a ground school instructor in the B-17 and B-29 program at Roswell, N.M. He served a tour of duty in the Philippines as Command Special Service Officer to the 5th Air Service Area Command.

After separation from the service in 1946, He returned to college and earned his BA degree in accounting and his public license to practice accounting.

He was employed by the west coast accounting headquarters of E.F. Hutton, a major Wall Street investment banking firm in 1948, and transferred to its Phoenix office in 1954 where he was employed as account executive, broker and assistant office manager.

He retired in 1974 and moved the family to their summer home at Rim Trail, north of Payson. Six years later, the family moved into Payson.

Mr. Copp was a life member of Scottsdale Lodge #43 F & AM, Phoenix York Rite Bodies and a life member of El Zaibah Shrine.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; two sons, John Douglas and James Edmond; and five grandchildren, Jessica, Jacqueline, Kevin, David and Rebecca.
