Veteran Alesha Huddlestun hooked up with freshman Lana Cluff to lead the Lady Longhorn cross country team to a second-place finish at the four-way Payson Invitational cross country meet Sept. 8 at Payson Golf Course.
With Huddlestun taking third and Cluff finishing fourth in the field of 33 runners, the Horns posted 52 points to trail only Mingus (32) in the final standings. Sinagua (62) was third and Blue Ridge (64) took fourth.
Huddlestun was clocked in at 23:45 and Cluff finished the about three mile course in 23:56. The winning time, 21:54, was turned in by a Sinagua runner. Although her time was respectable, it didn't threaten the course record of 20:30 set by former PHS running sensation Whitney Hardt.
Samantha Elliott (14th; 26:32), Sarah Agnes (15th; 26:40), Shanna Coleman (16th; 26:44) and Crystal Sprinkle (27th; 31:34) also represented Payson.
The 2004 campaign opened for Payson Sept. 4 at the Peaks Invitational in Flagstaff. There, Huddlestun again paced the Lady Longhorn effort finishing 71st overall in 23:09. More than 200 runners participated in the varsity competition that was won in 19:54.
Trailing Huddlestun were Elliott (142nd; 25:03), Coleman (163rd; 25:53), Agnes (167th; 26:09) and Sprinkle (204th; 30:45).
In the junior varsity competition, Cluff -- running in her first high school meet -- was 67th among 212 entrants. Her time of 25:22 was well off the winning ET of 21:26.
Next up for the Lady Horns is the Four-Corners Invitational Sept. 18 in Flagstaff. Start time is 9:30 a.m.
