Craig Begay of Many Farms won the bull riding championship at the Payson High School rodeo held Sept. 11 and 12. Begay won with a score of 74. A total of 21 prep cowboys competed in the event but only three stayed aboard long enough to score.

Seidel rode his way to the saddle bronc championships, posting a score of 65 on the first day and 61 on the second.

Although Riggins entered the barrel racing, she was not credited with an official time.

Among the boys, Wyatt Althoff of Oracle won the all-around title with 24 points. Althoff earned points in the steer wrestling, team roping and tie down roping.

Flagstaff High School's Danielle Howell was named the all-around cowgirl after scoring 25 points in the pole bending, breakaway roping and barrel racing.

The Payson rodeo is the first in a series of 10 Arizona High School Rodeo Association-sponsored competitions held throughout the year.

Next on the agenda is the Arizona State Fair rodeo Oct. 10 in Phoenix.

The series culminates with the AHSRA championships June 10 to 12 at Apache Gold Casino near Globe.
