Sludge to the Judge cross country boys race winner, Carlan Pontious of Payson, could have posted a much better time than the 13:01 clocking with which he was credited.

Justice of the Peace Ronnie McDaniel congratulates Payson's Carl Pontious and Brooke Schmelter of Tucson Mountain View for winning the Sludge to the Judge homecoming run.

His time, although good enough for the win by more than 10 seconds, is misleading because Pontious did not see the finish line until the last few meters of the race. Running on the south side of Main Street, Pontious didn't know the finish was on the north side.

With finish judge Chuck York screaming at him to shift sides of the street, Pontious finally heard the urgings and made a late change that had him careening over the finish line and almost stumbling.

"I was so focused, I never saw the finish until late," he said.

This was his first running of the Sludge race and was not familiar with the course. The sophomore transferred to Payson last spring from Wisconsin.

The women's champion of the race was Brooke Schmelter of Tucson Mountain View (15:37).
