The Rim country was treated to a spectacular light show courtesy of Hurricane Jeanne Tuesday night. Moisture moving north from the Gulf of Mexico ignited thunderstorms which lit up the sky and rumbled through Payson overnight.
Gary Roberts, fire information officer for the Payson Ranger District, said the lightning set off two fires.
One, the Campground Fire, burned near Christopher Creek campground.
The other, the Cienega Fire, is still burning one-half mile north of La Cienega Ranch in the Dude Fire burn area. While it was contained at five acres, firefighters are allowing the interior to burn out, so Rim country residents may see smoke into the weekend.
"There's a lot of dead and down stuff from the old Dude Fire, and we don't need that fuel there," Roberts said.
