Hatters Whoop It Up

There was a time when a woman reached a certain age, she picked up her knitting needles, found a comfortable rocking chair and gently glided into her golden years.

Not so with the Red Hat Society, an international fellowship of women 50 and over, who get together for laughs, friendship and fun.

Hostess Lori Hvidsten (front) and fellow Red Hatters get the fun started during a cocktail party Thursday evening. Monday, Rim country's 11 Red Hat Society chapters will gather at Mad Dawg's and Mel's for a luncheon to celebrate National Red Hat Society Day.

The 11 Red Hat Society chapters in the Rim country will gather for the first time to celebrate National Red Hat Society Day at Mad Dawg's and Mel's.

In a world that tunes into a never-ending montage of beauty, youth and svelte bodies, thousands of mature women are turning to each other for camaraderie.

"It's an empowering thing," said Claire Wall, queen mother of the East Verde River Belles. "There's no structure. We just get together and have a good time."

Wall said women over 50 interested in joining are encouraged to attend the luncheon.

And if you come, make sure to dress in purple and wear a red hat.

"Bring your own hat," said Su Connell of the Mad Hatters. "If you don't have a red hat, stick a red ribbon or rose in your hair."

The luncheon is Monday, April 25 at Mad Dawg's and Mel's. Connell suggested arriving at 11:30 a.m. for some pre-lunch socializing.

Women under 50 are also welcome, and should wear a pink headdress and lavender clothing.
