Tonto Apache Youth Shine At Mesa Meet

For Tonto Apache Track and Field team member Cassie Johnson, her shot put heave in an April 16 USA Track and Field youth meet at Mesa Community College earned her first place honors and some spending money.

Tonto Apache Track and Field team member Hunter Doka competed in the Bantam Boys javelin and shot put at a youth meet held at Mesa College.

"Her father told her if she threw over 6 meters, he would give her $50," Tonto coach Billy Joe Winchester said. "Her best was 5.48 meters.

"On her last throw in the shot put, she threw 6.65 meters," Winchester said.

Johnson was competing in the Bantam Girls age division.

Also for the Tonto team, Hunter Doka competed in both the Bantam Boys javelin and shot put.

According to USA Track and Field official results, he tied for fifth in the shot put and eighth in the javelin.

"Hunter is only half the size of all the other throwers," Winchester said. "But he has great explosion and power."

A trio of Tontos shined in the Youth Boys division throw events.

In the discus, Jarred Begay was first, Val Doka second and Landis Quade seventh, USA statistics show.

In the shot put, Doka was second, Begay fourth and Quade seventh.

According to Winchester, the Tonto team was missing several of its throwers, but he anticipates they will return to the team for an April 30 meet at Tempe High School.

"We will also be going to Las Vegas May 6 to 9 for the Las Vegas Flyers Invitational," he said.
