Wet weather was one of the contributing factors in the rock slide on the original Gowan Loop Trail at Tonto Natural Bridge in February. The slide forced the park to close that part of the trail.
The park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Starting Memorial Day May 30, hours will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call (928) 476-4202.
"The old side where the crack is located is still closed, but the newer section of the Loop Trail, built in 1991, remains open," said Tonto Natural Bridge park manager John Boeck.
"And you can hike through under the bridge if you wish. We just had a geotechnical engineer inspect the site, and they will be making a recommendation on what to do.
"The two possibilities would be pinning the rock and applying some type of adhesive to secure it, or they might remove the rock through blasting," Boeck said. "The blasting could be directed away from the natural bridge and the foot bridge, so there would be no danger of damage."
