Crook Scams Money On Chamber's Reputation

At least six area businesses have been scammed into purchasing advertising space on the "Chamber's Street Map."

No such map is being published by the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Tina Bruess, executive director of the chamber, is issuing a

warning to the community about the problem and it has been discussed with the Payson Police Department.

"They were here back in November and now they're back," Bruess said.

She said a man using the name "Don Lamb" sometimes makes the initial contact by phone on behalf of the National Ad Co., Inc. of Kelso, Wash.

The chamber contacted authorities in Kelso and questions have been raised there about the legitimacy of this company and principals.

"The rest of the transaction is done by fax until he comes to collect the money. Then he takes the check to the bank it is drawn on, shows his identification, cashes the check and moves on," Bruess said.

She said any project endorsed or supported by the chamber, requesting the purchase of advertising space, will be preceded by a letter of introduction to the project on official chamber letterhead and signed by Bruess.

She urges anyone with concerns about this scam or other questionable promotions to call the chamber, (928) 474-4515.
