Coffee Shop Gives Woman Roots In Rim Country

Betty Cockrell and her husband, Pat, started living in the Rim Country part time about a year ago.

They bought a place for the weekends, but liked living in the area so much, they wanted to find a way to make it their full-time residence.

Cockrell discovered her chance just a couple of months ago when she saw and advertisement for help at the new drive-through coffee shop, Java Jo'z. She applied and with 13 years in the food service industry, was hired by owner Jacqui Whitledge to be the shop's general manager.

"It was also a way to try something new," Cockrell said, "And I love coffee."

Her favorite? Mochaccinos -- iced, blended coffee, milk and chocolate. She said right now, they are also the most popular drink with customers.

The convenience of the dual drive-through window service is what makes Java Jo'z different than the other shops, she said.

Outside of work, Cockrell's time is devoted to her family. She said her parents were the inspiration for her life, her mother was dedicated to the family and very loving, and her father was very strong and taught her, "You can do anything if you set your mind to it."

Cockrell and her husband have a son and a daughter and five grandchildren, all living in the Phoenix area.

Spending time with her family is the most luxurious thing in her life, she said.

For fun, she also likes traveling around her neighborhood on a motorized scooter, "It gets me closer to nature," she said.

Java Jo'z is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday.

"Stop by and say ‘hi,'" Cockrell urges, "I'm happy to be here. It's a good life."
