The Tonto Community Concert Association's 27th season begins Aug. 21 with a performance by the acclaimed men's chorus Spirit of Phoenix.
The Spirit of Phoenix is the primary performing group of the Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and has been an institution in the Phoenix area for more than 60 years. Chartered in 1943, they have captured the title of International Chorus Champion three times, and have earned 14 medals in international competition, making them one of the most decorated choruses in society history.
The Spirit of Phoenix performs at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 21 at Payson High School auditorium. The afternoon's show is, "Let's Celebrate -- A Celebration of Life, Love and the American Way." The men's chorus is said to be among the best sounds ever to come out of the Phoenix area. The program mixes love songs, old standards, Broadway tunes, gospel music and a tribute to the Armed Forces.
Future guest artists will be singer Susan Egan, known as The Belle of Broadway, Oct. 14; guitarist Edgar Cruz, Nov. 3; pianist Cristiana Pegoraro, Nov. 22; the review, Country Tonight, Jan. 28; singers Nathan Granner and Lisa Williamson, who present both opera and musical theater pieces, Feb. 11; The Coats vocal band, March 6; and the Manhattan Rhythm Kings, who will have the joint jumping with popular music from the 20s, 30s and 40s, April 3.
