That the Payson Rodeo Board would allow a scoreboard advertising smokeless tobacco is quite distressing. The effects of tobacco are well-documented; it will kill you. We do not need to promote its use, especially in venues where the young and impressionable will be in attendance. A better idea would be a billboard showing a jawless and voiceless victim of this particular form of tobacco.
I am puzzled by our society's unwillingness to ban the advertising and use of tobacco in all public places. Certainly, no one will argue that we are all entitled to breathe pure air; air that does not contain cancer-causing carcinogens. Great progress has been made, but more needs to be done. Let us send a clear message to our youth -- do not use tobacco in any way, shape or form. Our elected council members should lead the way by voting to do the right thing -- ban the advertising and use of tobacco in all public places.
