Pioneer Title Tourney Has Historic Close Finish

It took a chip-off shoot-out to decide the championship team of the Ninth Annual Pioneer Title Agency Benefit Golf Tournament.

Following 18 holes of play, Aug. 13 at Payson Golf Course, the team of Willie Ingram, Wes Moore, Mark Suir, and Guy Fisher tied the foursome of Bruce Rosch, Aaron Watkins, Wes Lasiter and Tom Flynn. Both teams checked in 16 under par.

The team of Willie Ingram, Wes Moore, Mark Suir and Guy Fisher captured the championship of the Pioneer Title Agency Benefit Golf Tournament.

In the chip-off, the Ingram, Moore, Suir and Fish team emerged victorious in what tournament organizers are calling one of the closest finishes in the history of the tournament.

The third place team -- Dale Strumke, Brandon Kelley, Kevin Newmann and Steve Costello -- turned in a card of 13 under.

The "Turkey Team," or the foursome with the tournament's highest scored, finished 10 over and each member was awarded a frozen turkey. On the squad were Eric Nelson, Katie O'Malley, Emily Nelson and Tim Zigler.

In the closest-to-the-pin competition on par 3 holes, winners were Virgil Cly on No. 14 and John McDermott on No. 14.

Longest drive for a male golfer went to former Payson High School links star Brandon Kelley. Among the female players, Lanell Hooke had the best drive.

All proceeds in the tournament, which last year amounted to $6,200, will be turned over to the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity, which provides decent, affordable and healthy houses in partnership with low- and moderate-income Payson residents.

Proceeds from this year's fray have not yet been counted.
