State Volleyball Matches Move To Pro Venue

Glendale Arena is the site for this year's high school volleyball girls state tournament, rather than Chandler Hamilton High School as in previous years.

That means young players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in one of the country's finest athletic facilities, the home of the Arizona Coyotes professional hockey team and the site for an upcoming Rolling Stones concert.

High school volleyball players will have the opportunity this year to play in Glendale Arena.

The championship matches in all classes are scheduled for Nov. 5.

The arena will also host state quarterfinal and semifinal matches on five courts.

Some games will be televised.

Officials estimate 70-plus teams, possibly including Payson, will play in the arena.

Wrestling and volleyball state championship tournaments were held in the arena last season.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association eventually hopes to have state championships in all sports played in the Glendale Arena.

Football title games could possibly be played in the new Cardinals stadium once it is completed.

Playing in state-of-the-art, professional sports arenas is a real thrill for high school athletes.

Change the tee time

The Payson Public Safety Christmas for Kids benefit golf tournament tee time has changed.

According to tournament director Matt Van Camp the new tee time is at 8 a.m. Originally the tournament was to tee off at 11 a.m., Aug. 27, at Payson Golf Course.

The annual benefit will also feature a barbecued steak dinner to be served at 6 p.m., Aug. 26, that will be prepared by Albert and Charlene Hunt.

For entry forms or more information, call Van Camp at 474-5177, ext. 251.

Free Punt, Pass and Kick events

The NFL/Gatorade Punt, Pass and Kick competition will be held 5 p.m., Sept. 16, on the Payson High School baseball field.

The competition allows boys and girls, aged 8-15, to show their football skills in punting, passing and place kicking. Scores are based on distance and accuracy. Registration begins Aug. 29.

The finalists in both boy's and girl's divisions will advance to regional competition. Regional winners may advance to the state championship that will be held during an Arizona Cardinals football game.
