I have noticed this past week that the bird population has diminished, particularly the hummingbirds. One of my neighbors has also noticed a reduction of the amount of food left in the feeders. I venture to guess that fall is not too far away. The birds have flown the coop, so to speak. I miss seeing the hummers every morning. Has anyone else noticed that there are fewer of those frenzied fliers around?
Tonto Village Fire District Auxiliary
The big Labor Day Bash is almost here. Don't forget to be in the Village by 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3. The brats and hotdogs will be ready to serve along with all the "fixin's" to go with the meal. At 1 p.m., the parade gets under way with the decorated all-terrain vehicles, and the Kids-n-Kritters as well. Most of the other activities were listed in last week's column, and there will be no shortage of entertainment all afternoon, including the big raffle drawing for the chain saw, grass whip and the garden gazebo, plus other prizes. Buy your raffle tickets from any volunteer fireman or woman or at the Double D. There will also be a display of the fire equipment and a table set up for fire safety brochures. Don't forget that the very popular "Sweeten the Chief" contest will also take place in the afternoon, along with the famous "chicken drop" contest put on by Jimmy Rabbit. See you all there!

A big thank you to Nick and Gail Hodges of Collins Ranch for the wonderful job they have done in landscaping the church property. Nick and Gail work very hard to keep the grounds looking "spiffy." Thank you both for a job well done.
Fire Wise meetings
Don't forget the next series of "Fire Wise" meetings on Aug. 27 starting at 10 a.m. at the LDS Church in Christopher Creek. Alice Andreas is the contact person for these very important meetings, and she can be reached at (928) 478-4105. Alice will also be the contact person for initiating a similar group for Tonto Village, which will be co-sponsored by the Tonto Village Fire District. The initial meeting will be sometime in September. The date and time will be announced in a future column.
Linda Digman will be adding another candle to her birthday cake on Aug. 29, then the next day her daughter Trina will celebrate her big day. They are planning a family get-together, grandbabies and all. Happy birthday to the both of you, have a wonderful day. Jan Davenport of Tonto Village III will be celebrating her birthday on Aug. 31. Jan helps out at the Double D occasionally, so stop in and wish her happy birthday.
Cliff Landrum has done it again. He won the Sunday pool tournament. Harvey Poyner shot his best, but still came in second. Bob from the Valley and a friend of Cliff's shot for third place. (We didn't get a last name.) But you know who you are.
The gals played at the Landmark this past Tuesday evening, the results were not available.
The gals are still getting together every Wednesday at the Tonto Village Chapel starting at 1 p.m. There have been so many gals showing up to play, that we needed two tables set up instead of one. The food has been absolutely fabulous besides. If you would like to join us, but do not know how to play, there are several gals who would be happy to show you how. It's easy and fun.
