NAPA, the National Automotive Parts Association, is the nation's leading automotive parts distributor. ASE, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair throughout the nation.

Dan Askey, NAPA vice president, presented Meares with a plaque honoring his Technician of the Year selection on Jan. 15 during NAPA's annual marketing conference in Reno, Nev.

Meares was selected to receive the honor out of a pool of nominees from throughout Arizona, based on a high level of commitment to certified training, outstanding customer satisfaction and his community involvement. He was nominated for the award by Gary Barcom, president of Barcom's Parts & Equipment, Inc., the NAPA dealer in Payson.

Meares and his staff attend year-round training at seminars, online and through video classes in all areas of automotive technology and customer service relations. Meares is involved in his church, where he serves on the deacon board and helps with the men's ministries. Besides donating to local charities, Meares and his wife are foster parents and also support a child in Uganda through World Vision.

Meares went into automotive repair after finishing high school. He attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and then enrolled at the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla., where he graduated from the aircraft maintenance program. Meares worked on aircraft in Tucson, but then decided he preferred to work in the automotive field. This led him to where he is today. He opened Payson Driveline in 2000.

Meares' commitment to excellence has earned his business, Payson Driveline & Auto Service, recognition as AAA Arizona's only AAA Approved Automotive Repair Facility and ASE's only Blue Seal of Excellence Repair Facility in the Payson Area. The company is also a member of the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau of Northern Arizona.

Payson Driveline & Auto Service, Inc. is at 501 W. Frontier St. Payson. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
