Chief Alliger has announced that starting this week, volunteer firefighters Mike Preston, Sam Coe and Pete Koutz will be among other firefighters who will be burning and thinning out the forest from the west end of Tonto Village III to the end of Fitch Lane. There will be sporadic brush burning, so do not be alarmed if you see smoke coming from that area.
If you call the fire station, a new voice will answer. Chief Alliger has a new secretary and her name is Michelle Montbleau. Michelle is not new to the area, she lived in Tonto Village a few years back and is now living in Payson. Welcome back, Michelle.
The regular monthly meeting of Tonto Village Fire Board will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 12 at the fire station. The meetings are always open to the public.
In last week's column, I mentioned that February is such a busy month for everyone, and this week is no exception. The Christian observance of the Lenten season started this past Wednesday, which is commonly known as Ash Wednesday.
For the Snyder household, this means abstinence and fasting throughout the Lenten season. This past Tuesday, known as Fat Tuesday, was the last day to celebrate the Mardi Gras. Parishioners from St. Philip's Catholic Church were treated to a fantastic Cajun meal prepared by Judy Michel-Alm and Jan Parsons. They are members of the St. Philip's Council of Ministries and are the people who organize this celebration every year.
There also were many volunteers who helped make the evening a success. The authentic dishes -- such as shrimp etouffee, chicken gumbo and king cakes -- along with gold, green and purple beads, masks and noisemakers were served to a full house.
Since Lent is now in effect for 40 days, it may be a good idea to say some special prayers for our troops in Iraq and a special prayer for Pope John Paul for a speedy recovery.
Tonto Village has increased by one when, on Jan. 13, 2005 at 1:22 p.m., Gabriella Louise Driver came into the world with the help of her new parents, Ellen and Lee Driver of Tonto Village. The proud-as-peacocks grandparents are Jack and Elizabeth Silver. Congratulations to all of you.
A happy belated birthday to Suzie Shill, whose birthday was Jan. 24. Suzie, along with two other birthday girls -- Lorraine Mathews (Feb. 5) and Kara Shaw (Feb. 11) from Tonto Village -- decided to give themselves a birthday present and traveled to Safford to a place called Essence of Tranquility. They treated themselves to herbal wraps, deep massages and the hot springs. What a great idea.
Clint Daniels of Tonto Village III, will add another candle to his birthday cake on Feb. 14. How lucky is that to have his birthday on St. Valentine's Day? Rick Meeker, our good fishing buddy, and Audrey Shaw celebrate their big day on Feb. 16. Happy birthday to all of you.
Get well wishes and prayers to Grace Daniels. Grace had surgery this past week, and she will be missed at the weekly dominoes games. We all hope to see you back at the table with all the gals real soon, Grace.
Cliff Landrum, Ethel Cain and Mike Bryan were the top pool winners on Sunday afternoon. If you would like to test your skill, come by around 3 p.m. with your favorite pool stick and have a go at winning.
Please remember the ones you love this Valentine's Day. It doesn't have to cost you anything to say ‘I love you' or ‘I appreciate you' to that special someone in your life.
