Heavy rains, bringing with them the possibility of flash flooding, have prompted Tonto National Forest officials to close public access to forest road systems located along Highway 87 -- the Beeline Highway leading from Phoenix to Payson.
Access to six forest roads intersecting Highway 87 and leading to Sycamore Creek, Sugar Loaf, Slate Creek, Bushnell Tanks, Mount Peeley and Kitty Jo are affected.
Forest officials advise users to remain on paved roads due to the possibility of flooding.
Hikers are also advised to stay off all hiking trails due to slippery and unpredictable conditions. Most of the hiking trails across the forest are subject to flash flooding.
Road and area closures will remain in effect through the weekend.
