Cora Blatterspiel, 88, of Union Township, N.J., died Feb. 9, 2005 in Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J. She was born June 24, 1916 in Phillipsburg, N.J.

She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Rheta Creveling Heitzman. She was a longtime resident of Union Township. After retiring, she moved to Arizona, and later moved back to Union Township.

She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) since 1961, and served as Shop Chairperson at the High Bridge Commercial Dress Company, where she worked as a sewing machine operator for many years, retiring when the company was closed down. She also was Secretary of the ILGWU for the Easton District Council. She was a 1934 graduate of Phillipsburg High School.

Mrs. Blatterspiel served on the Union Township Committee from 1977 until 1980 and was the first woman mayor of the township in 1980. She also served on the Union Township Bicentennial Committee, as well as the Union Township Board of Education. She was a member of the Hunterdon Hills VFW Auxiliary #6059. While retired in Arizona, she was a member of the Oxford Dictionary Committee, the Apache Junction Friends of the Library, the Arizona Quilters Guild, the Apache Junction Democratic Club, the Palm Springs Homeowners Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Board of Adjustment.

She is survived by daughter, Rheta L. (Edward) Spinks, of Hampton, N.J; son, Ralph (Carol) of Payson, Ariz.; brother, Carl Heitzman of Hampton, N.J.; sister, Caroline McMullen of San Marcos, Calif.; grandson, Eric Spinks of Bloomsbury, N.J.; granddaughter, Katy Spinks of Portland, Ore.; and two great-grandchildren.

Her husband of 53 years, Francis "Frank" died in 2002. The couple made their home in Payson between 1991 and 1999.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home.
