Coach Carol Hayes said the undefeated Rim Country Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team is a special one.
"It's a team I can go way deep into the bench and come up with a group of players that will play together on the court," she said. "They are all so very talented."
In compiling an 8-0 White Mountain League record, the Lady Mavericks have thrived on a well-balanced offensive attack in which it's not uncommon to have eight or nine players break into the scoring column.
In a 46-33 win over Snowflake Jan. 13, eight players contributed to the offense. Cydney Figueroa led all scorers with 11 points and Marquel Waterman had 10.
While the team has had some tough games, others have been blowouts. The Lady Mavs blasted Mogollon 54-8 and humbled Joseph City 62-7.
Figueroa's game-high 20 points Jan. 20 lifted the Lady Mavericks past Round Valley 51-21.
Eight players scored in the team's 40-16 thumping of Blue Ridge Feb 2. The only player in double figures for that game was Kayla O'Donnell, who scored 10 points.
In some games, however, the Mavericks needed a big boost from one player to emerge with a win. O'Donnell contributed 19 points to RCMS's 33-27 victory in Winslow Feb. 8.
If the Lady Mavs continue to win, they could earn a No. 1 seed into the White Mountain League tournament Feb. 26 in Winslow -- big step in fulfilling the team's goal of bringing the WML title to RCMS.
