Tonto Apaches Place Third At Flagstaff Meet

The Tonto Apache Track and Field team is not about to let rain and inclement weather slow its quest for honors.

With rain falling in the Rim country most of the week, the team headed to Flagstaff Feb. 19 and the dry indoor confines of Walkup Skydome on the campus of Northern Arizona University.

Sisters Andrea Hinton (l) and Shawte Hinton are valuable members of the Tonto Apache Track and Field team. The two placed in the shot-put at the Arizona Indoor Classic meet in Flagstaff.

There, the team won third-place honors in the Arizona Indoor Classic meet sanctioned by USA Track and Field.

"We have not had very many days of practice because of the weather, but the kids were in good spirits for the meet," coach Billy Joe Winchester said.

The team, which participated in just the shot-put events, was without a handful of its athletes who remained in Payson due to injuries and illness.

The Tonto Apaches were paced by first-place showings from Jordan Hinton and Kindall Begay. Hinton claimed the gold in the Youth Boys (13-14-years) division and Begay claimed first in the Young Women division (15-16 years).

Other Tonto placers included: Cassie Johnson (second, BG), Andrea Hinton (sixth, BG), Hunter Doka (second, BB), Skyler Thomas (fourth, BB), Shawte Hinton (third, MG), Heath Quade (sixth, MB), Marquel Waterman (second, YG), Shane Levine (third, YB), Val Doka (fourth, YB), Cody Waterman (fifth, YB), Jarred Begay (sixth, YB), Landis Quade (seventh, YB), Trevor Thomas eighth, YB) and Justin Johnson (fifth, IB).

Next up for the Tonto Apache team is the Grand Canyon State Winter Games Feb. 26 at Camelback High School.

Winchester anticipates about 25 team members will compete at the event.
