Q: Duthie Martin Memorial Highway is the new name for the Highway 87...who were they?

A: Highway 87 was dedicated the Duthie Martin Memorial Highway in October 1996. Gilbert A. (Gib) Duthie, a 39-year-old resident of Mesa, was the first Department of Public Safety officer to die in the line of duty. He was killed Sept. 5, 1970 when his patrol car was swept away by the rising waters of Sycamore Creek near Sunflower on the Beeline Highway.

DPS Officer Robert K. Martin, 57, of Chandler died Aug. 15, 1995 when Ernesto Salgado Martinez shot him to death during a traffic stop about 7 miles north of Shea Boulevard. Martinez escaped and was captured two days later in California. Martinez was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to die by lethal injection for killing the 27-year DPS veteran.
