One man was hospitalized when he was ejected from a vehicle after rolling down a 90-foot embankment off Highway 87 Friday afternoon, police said.
The man, Manuel Martinez, 42 of Payson, a Tree Pro employee, was flown to Scottsdale Osborn Healthcare where he is being treated for chest injuries.
"Manuel is doing pretty good now," said Shane Owens, owner of Tree Pro. "He has improved a lot."
The driver of the truck, Reuben Avalos, 35 of Payson, was also thrown out of the vehicle.
"The driver refused treatment," said Department of Public Safety Officer Bill Murphy, who, along with the Houston Mesa Fire Department, responded to the call.
The accident occurred, said Murphy, when Martinez, also a Tree Pro employee, lost control of and rolled a work truck on Highway 87, north of the East Verde bridge. The right wheels of the 1-ton truck went off the pavement, the driver over-steered, crossed both lanes of traffic and went over the edge of the road, rolling multiple times. The vehicle was totaled, Murphy said.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt.
Murphy said citations will be issued, but would not elaborate.
The accident happened at 2:50 p.m. There was little interruption in the traffic flow, Murphy said.
