Members of the Payson Men's Golf Association are scrambling to prepare themselves for a pair of much-anticipated summer tournaments.
The two-man best ball championship will be July 6 and 13 and the club championship match play tournament is slated for the first four Wednesdays in August.
The two frays, along with the Sept. 21 President's Cup, are the PMGA's premier showdowns of the links season.
In prepping for the big shows, members locked horns June 29 in a four-man, two best ball formatted event at Payson Golf Course.
With a card of 113, Gary Vaplon, Frank Karnes, Armand Werle and Tom Eaglesham staked claim to first-place honors.
Frank Szakal, Warren Mulcahy, Popeye Clay and Ward Johnson were second with a 114.
Also with a 114, Terry Lindsey, Wayne Little, Bobby Bryant and Morris Kropf were third on a scorecard playoff.
Best effort in the closest-to-the-pin competition was turned in by Doug Talbot on No. 17 where his tee shot rolled to within one foot of an ace.
Others to pocket prize money were Larry Baker (No. 2; 5 feet, 1 inch), Jack Greenshield (No. 8; 11 feet, 1 1/2 inch), Tim Ernst (No. 14; 7 feet, 11 inches) and Lindsey (No; 5; 5 feet, 6 inches).
