Four teams are in a neck-and-neck battle for the Payson Men's Golf Association two-man best ball championship to be decided July 13 at a second and final round of play.
Following the first round July 6, the teams that tied included Frank Szakal/Jack Greenshield, Doug Talbot/ Herb Sherman, Dick Harding/Jim Furimsky and John Pauley and Tim Ernst. All four carded scores of 56 on opening day.
Two teams are just one stoke off the leader pace -- Armand Wele/Peter Foster and Lenny Niedens/Bill Cain.
Of the 16 teams entered in the tournament, six are within two shots of the clubhouse leaders. In the closest-to-the-pin competition, prize money winners included Terry Lindsay (No. 2; 15 feet, 9 inches), John Waring (No. 5; 15 feet), Larry Baker (No. 8; 9 feet, 2 inches), Talbot (No. 14; 3 feet, 6 1/2 inches) and Harding (No. 17; 8 feet, 10 inches).
According to club member Dick Ceyler, the two-man championship is one of the PMGA's major tournaments of the season.
In addition to the final round of the championships, the PMGA also has on the agenda a July 20 jaunt to Pine Meadows in Overgaard where the two men's clubs will battle in a low-net event.
