Golfers Rack Up Points In Two Contests

A Jack and Jill shoot-out and a Two-Man Best Ball Championship provided plenty of links action for members of the Payson Men's and Women's Golf Associations.

In the Jack and Jill fray, held July 12 at Payson Golf Course, PWGA members invited a counterpart from the PMGA to be their playing partners in a best ball formatted tournament.

By carding a 56, the team of Bonny Singer and Terry Lindsey claimed top honors.

The battle for the silver medal turned into a dog fight among four teams who posted identical scores of 58 -- Laura Meyocks/ Ken Althoff, Judy Neal/Dick Ceyler, Gerry Quisenberry/Gary Vaplon and Jeannie Griffen/Don Gyde.

In the closest to the pin competition, Kay Davis turned in the best effort of the day on No. 14 --er tee shot rolled to within 2 feet, 4 inches of the flag.

Ken Althoff pocketed prize money on No. 5 where he was within 7 feet 6 inches of an ace.

Jim Furmisky was closet on No. 8 where he swatted to within 12 feet of the pin. With a lie of 14 feet 8 inches on No. 17, Jan Burns was a winner.

Following the tournament, at a 19th hole clubhouse celebration, the PWGA members treated their guests to a Mexican food luncheon.

The following day, members of the PMGA locked horns in the second and final round of a two-man best ball championship.

With a final tally of 113, Don Gyde and Bill McKenna claimed the PMGA crown. On the first round they tallied a 60 and on the second improved to 53.

Doug Talbot and Herb Sherman finished as tournament runners-up one stroke off the winning pace.

In the battle for third place, John Pauley and Tim Ernst out-dueled Gary Campbell and John Calderwood on a score card playoff.

Both teams finished the regulation 36 holes at 116.

Closest to the pin winners included John Waring (No. 2; 22 feet 8 inches); Don Nicholas (No. 5; 22 feet 1/2 inch); Ralph Lindo (No. 8; 11 feet 5 inches); Lenny Niedens (No. 17; 7 feet); and Talbot (No. 14; 8 feet 11 inches).

The PMGA had an open date July 20 and will return to action July 27 in a black and white team event. The club championship will be played each Wednesday in August.
