Young Stars Shine At Tournament

After winning two consecutive Arizona State Tournament Little League clashes, the Payson All Stars suffered the heartbreak of defeat in a 19-6 loss to Ahwatukee.

Now sporting a 2-1 record, the Payson stars return to action at 5:30 p.m., July 22 at Mt. View Elementary School, located at 21st Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix. Payson's opponent was not known at press time.

Following the defeat to Ahwatukee July 20 in Phoenix, Payson coach Ty Goodman remained upbeat.

"We are still in this to win the (state) championship and we have as good a chance as anyone," he said. "We think we've already beaten the best team in the tournament."

The coach was referring to the defending state champion Arrowhead team that Payson whipped 4-3 in a July 18 tournament opener.

In the win, Blake Cannon pitched the entire six innings and was credited with the win. Goodman said he will again start Cannon in the July 22 showdown.

In Payson's second game, a 16-6 win over Eloy, July 19 in Phoenix, Nick McMullen picked up the victory. "He pitched a very good game," Goodman said.

The Payson team entered the state tournament as the Area 1 and District 1 champions having won both titles earlier in Flagstaff.
