Mud, 3 to 4 feet of it, washed across Highway 188 a few miles south of Tonto Basin Monday afternoon closing both lanes of traffic.
A second, much smaller, mudslide also washed onto the road about a half mile south, blocking only the southbound lane.
The weekend's fires had killed vegetation in the area, creating unstable ground, and the soil didn't hold, said Lene Hulbert, maintenance lead for Highway 188.
"This has been an ongoing thing since they built the highway," he said. "We've been kind of expecting this."
No one was hurt and work crews cleared the road in about an hour.
