It was billed the Phoenix City Junior Championships, but the geographic title didn't exclude a foursome of Rim country golfers from participating.
Payson's Brad Meyocks, Tyler Apps, Blake Cannon and Jordan Henderson participated in the gold-medal tournament June 7 and 8 in Cave Creek.
Meyocks, a standout member of the Payson High School golf team, competed in the boys 15- to 18-year-old group. After shooting an 81 the first day, he improved to 76 the second day and finished tied for 14th.
Cameron Edens of Phoenix, and Alex Johnson and Daniel Ross, both of Tucson, tied for the championship with identical scores of 142.
In the boys 11 to 12 age group, Henderson carded a 93 (48 and 45) to finish behind the eventual champion -- Austin Quick of Scottsdale. Quick posted 71.
The best showing among the Payson contingent was posted by Apps in the 10-and-under division. His total of 79 (41 and 38) earned him a third-place finish behind two Phoenix golfers, Anthony Quezada (76) and Randy Ross (77).
Cannon finished in eighth place with an 86 (41 and 45).
Next on the Junior Golf Association of Arizona circuit is the Kingman City Championships June 16 and 17 at Gerbat Cliffs Golf Course and the Thunderbird Junior Classic June 22 and 23. The 13- to 18-year-olds will play at Biltmore Golf Course and the players 12-and-under at Mountain Shadows.
