Don't Forget Dad This Sunday

This Sunday is Father's Day. There are a variety of things that you can do for the dads in your family from just giving him the day off from "honey dos" to taking him out to dinner. Giving dads flowers is now an accepted practice.

My dad is gone now, but I will remember him with a special thank-you for being my dad and for singing me lullabies when I was little to put me to sleep. I can hear his voice today, he had a really nice baritone sound.

So, do remember all the dads this Sunday, because you don't have him forever. Tell him you love him.

Fire season is here

The fire season is here so that means for all of us to do our share to reduce the danger in our immediate vicinity. Here are a few steps that you can do now:

1. Create a defensible space 30 feet wide around your cabin. If you have firewood stacked next to your home, move it away to 30 feet.

2. Clean your chimney after every three cords of wood and check the spark arrestors on top of the chimney.

3. Place a shovel and a fire extinguisher outside of your front door.

4. If you have a scanner, keep it on at all times to roam or scan.

5. Check the batteries in your fire alarms in your home. Test them to make sure the batteries are not dead.

6. If a fire starts, call 911.

The red flags are out so that means extreme fire danger and no open fires of any kind at any time.

If you would like more information on how to protect your home and emergency evacuation procedures, brochures and pamphlets are available at the fire station. The telephone number is (928) 478-4875.

Bear Flat

Mary McTyre, a longtime resident of the area, was taken by surprise this past weekend, when her family and friends showed up to help her celebrate her birthday which was on June 14. I won't tell you how many candles were on her birthday cake, but I will say that a fire extinguisher was standing by. Happy belated birthday, Mary. We all wish you many more in the years to come.

Birthdays, anniversaries

Lori Mulvey of Tonto Village III, will be adding another candle to her birthday cake on June 17. Lori is part of the Tonto Village Domino Divas and plays with us whenever she can. Lori is an excellent cook so she brings some wonderful food to the gatherings. Happy birthday, Lori.

A very special couple will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary on June 18. Grant and Marie Coley of Tonto Village III will have a quiet day for their anniversary, but maybe Grant has some surprise up his sleeve. We will wait and see what happens. Anyway, happy anniversary to you, Grant and Marie. We wish you both many more years together.

Pool Cues

Cliff Landurm won again on Sunday afternoon. Where are all of those good pool sharks? Cliff needs some competition. Mike Bryan and Ethel Cain shot for second and third place.

Tuesday evening the pool tables were humming with the ladies group shooting for top honors.

Kara Shaw came out as the winner. Lorraine ‘Bo' Mathews and Phyllis Ballard were second- and third-place winners.
