Lady Longhorn volleyball coaches Arnold Stonebrink and Judy Perham have been putting their charges through the paces in open gym sessions, summer tournaments and soon at a team camp.
Next on the agenda for the netters is the 24-team Blue Ridge Invitational Summer Tournament July 1 and 2 in Lakeside and a Northern Arizona University hosted team camp July 5 in Wilson Dome.
The Lady Horns enter the fray fresh off an appearance in the Miami Invitational June 17 and 18.
For the showdown in the copper city, the coaches took two teams -- a varsity and B squad.
At the completion of the first day, the varsity had earned a No. 5 ranking among the 24 teams entered. On the second day in a single elimination showdown, the Lady Horns were eliminated by a loss to Safford.
The B squad struggled the opening day and fell into the consolation bracket. There, the youngsters won three consecutive matches to claim the consolation bracket championship. The victories were over Wilcox B, Morenci B and A.
At Blue Ridge, the Lady Horns will have only one team entered.
According to Perham, officials ruled schools could not enter more than one squad because the field was full with varsity teams.
Open gym sessions are 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the summer in Wilson Dome.
All PHS aspiring volleyball players are invited to attend, Perham said.
