John Waring, a veteran member of the Payson Men's Golf Association, turned in a day on the links to write home about.
His accomplishments during a June 22 "four-men select drive, three-best balls" formatted tournament at Payson Golf Course included leading his foursome to a first-place finish and pocketing closest-to-the-pin prize money on No. 14.
Herb Sherman, Tom Mallett and Sil Egler rounded out Waring's foursome. The four carded a 165 to outduel Gary Vaplon, Roger Poole, Arman Werle and Jim Livingston for the title. The runners-up finished at 170.
On Waring's closest-to-the-pin tee shot, the ball rolled to within 12 feet, 11 inches of the flag.
John Pauley, Dick Harding, Peter Foster and Don Gyde won third place with a 171.
Closest-to-the-pin winners other than Waring were Tim Ernst (No. 2; 13 feet, 6 inches and No. 8; 14 feet, 2 inches), Gary Vaplon (No. 5; 27 feet, 10 inches) and Pauley (No. 17; 4 feet, 3 inches).
Next on the PMGA agenda is a June 29 "four man, two best balls ABCD" formatted tournament at PGC.
The PMGA's annual two man best ball championship will be played July 6 and 13. The four rounds of the club championship will be contested Aug. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
