The Payson Independence Day Men's Soccer Tournament has attracted some of the Valley's finest teams of players over 35 years old.
Among the squads that will join Payson in the tournament are Mirage, Sand Dragons, Incinerators and Samba. All have participated in previous years tournaments and battled for top honors.
The fray has drawn one newcomer --alizo.
"That's a team we don't know anything about," Payson team member and veteran player Lee Woods said. "We'll have to wait too see just how good they are."
Payson enters the fray hoping to play with the same expertise and vigor they did in 2003 when the team earned its highest finish ever -- second place.
Last year, Payson struggled to a last-place finish.
The tournament kicks off at 9 a.m., July 2 on both Rumsey Park multipurpose fields and continues Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The championship game will be played at 9:30 a.m. July 4 at the Rumsey south field.
In the tournament format, wins are worth six points and ties three points. Teams receive one point for each goal scored with a maximum of three points. One point is awarded for a shutout.
At the conclusion of the tournament, the points will be compiled and the two teams with the greatest number will earn the right to play in the July 4 championship game. In case of ties, the tiebreaker will be the results of head-to-head meetings, goal differentials, goals for and goals against.
