The strength of the Longhorn track and field team is the one-two punches in the distance runs and sprints. That became evident at the season-opening Class 3A North Duals meet March 2 in the Northern Arizona University Skydome in Flagstaff.

There, the Horn distance combo of Carlan Pontious and David Cluff finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. Pontious was timed in 4:24.55 and Cluff in 4:39:54. In the 3,000 meters, Pontious took third (19:16.88) and Cluff was seventh (19:48.38).

In the 60-meter dash, Luke Apfel ran to a second-place showing (7:21) and Brandon Echols was 10th (7:60) in the 58-runner field.

In the 400 meters, Apfel claimed fourth (4:43) and Echols 12th (57:99).

The performances of Pontious, Cluff, Apfel and Echols earned the Horns the majority of their 28 team points that were enough for a fifth-place finish in the nine-team field. Snowflake took home the meet crown with 68 points. Posting 52, Blue Ridge was second.

The Longhorn cause in Flagstaff also received impressive high jump efforts from Brian Schwind and Kyle Pugel. Both cleared 5-foot-10-inches to tie Monument Valley's Ryan Young for second place. In a tie breaker on fewer misses, Schwind was awarded third and Pugel took fourth.

Schwind also excelled in the triple jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 37 feet, 5 inches.
