Locals Celebrate National Prayer Day

The Payson National Day of Prayer begins at noon, May 5 at Green Valley Park.

Performance artist, Steve Stevens sings the national anthem a capella. Afterward, he leads the audience in "America, the Beautiful," which includes the theme words for this year's National Day of Prayer, "God shed His grace on thee."

Stevens has performed the national anthem during events at Bank One Ballpark and America West Arena.

Randy Kaufman, leader of the "Sound Doctrine" Praise and Worship Team lends his talent during several prayer songs.

Then, Kirk Calkins, vice president of operations for the national Presidential Prayer Team, who wille praying for President Bush, our nation and military personnel, will say a special prayer.

The National Day of Prayer was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952 as an opportunity for people of all religions and faiths to exercise their constitutional rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

The event, sponsored by the Payson Christian Ministerial Fellowship, will conclude at 1 p.m.

Those attending will meet just south of the flag pole at Green Valley Park. Seating is limited so get there early or bring a chair. Friends, family and neighbors are welcome.
