Lady Horns Struggle At Chino Skirmish

A lack of sprinters and jumpers put the clamps on any hopes the Lady Longhorn track team had of winning the Chino Valley Invitational.

In the meet April 29 near Prescott, the Lady Horns did not have an entrant in the 100-meter dash, the high jump, long jump or a foursome in the 4x100 relay.

Without athletes to compete in those events, the Lady Horns also will be shackled in their pursuit of region honors when the Grand Canyon championships are held May 6 and 7 at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

At the GCR finals, the Lady Horns will rely -- like they did in the Chino Valley Invitational -- on senior hurdler/shot-putter Krystal McRae and freshman distance runner Lana Cluff.

McRae won the bronze medal in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. Her time of 16.57 in the 100 meters was slightly off her season's personal record of 16.40.

In the 300-meters event, she lowered her previous best of 53.95 to 49.01.

Freshman distance runner Lana Cluff ran to a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run at the Chino Valley Invitational. In the 1,600 meters, she was sixth.

McRae put on a rare display of speed and strength by entering the shot-put ring where she uncorked a throw of 30 feet, 3 1/2 inches that earned here a fifth-place finish.

While the senior veteran was doing her fair share for the Lady Horn effort, Cluff -- a high school rookie -- was putting her potential on display against older, more seasoned athletes.

In the 800 meters, the freshman ran to a fifth-place finish in 2:46.69.

Her time of 6:10.66 in the 1,600 meters bettered her season's best by almost 10 seconds and earned her a sixth-place finish.

Fueled by the efforts of McRae, Cluff and other team members, the Lady Horns garnered 50 team points to finish fifth in the 12-team field.

With 94 points, host Chino Valley won the invitational title. Fountain Hills, 91, was second, Wickenburg, 70, third and Sedona, 67.5, fourth.

PHS team members who earn top-three finishes in the regional finals at NAU earn the right to participate in the 4A state championship May 12 to 14 at Mesa Community College.
