Teenager Sweeps Benefit 5k

A teenager who says he wasn't much of a cross country runner on the Alchesay Falcon team has won his second successive Payson Area Habitat for Humanity Home Run 5K overall championship.

Jonah Beach of Cibecue won the benefit run Saturday at Rumsey Park covering the 3.1 miles in 17:33.

In the women's division of the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity Home Run 5K, Cynthia Pool of Tonto Basin finished first in 21:21.

His nearest competitor, Chris Standage (30-39 years) of Mesa, was about one minute behind the champion.

Beach, who competed in the 15- to 19-years age group, said the best he did while running cross country for Alchesay was about a 20th-place finish in the regional championships.

His performance in the 5K left little doubt, however, that he was the best among the 168 who entered the competition.

Last year, Beach won the event in 16:07 over a different course.

Third-place honors in the men's division were garnered by Matt Rihs (20-29 years) in 18:43.

In the women's division, Cynthia Pool of Tonto Basin won top honors in 21:21. Pool was entered in the 40-49-years age division. Trude Bate (30-39 years) was second among the winners covering the course in 22:06. Karen Donmoyer (40-49 years) finished third in 22:30.

The competition turned festive following the run when participants settled at Rumsey Park for a pancake breakfast while listening to tunes piped in by a disc jockey.

The 5K event is held each year to benefit the Payson Area Habitat for Humanity and its mission to build affordable housing in the Rim country.
