Mary Cain and Jinny Barnes paced members of the Payson Women's Golf Association in a low-gross and flighted-low-net tournament held May 10 at Payson Golf Course.
Cain tied for first place in the low net A flight and pocketed closest to the pin prize money on No. 5 where her tee shot rolled to within 10 feet, 3 inches of the flag.
Barnes played her way to a second-place finish in the C flight with a card of 69 and took home closest to the pin honors on No. 17. There, she had a lie of 21 feet, 4 inches.
In the A flight dead-knot, Cain tied with Jan Burns. Both posted identical scores of 70.
In B flight, longtime PWGA member Kay Davis out dueled Blanch Nyberg for the crown.
Davis finished at 73 and Nyberg turned in a 75.
Top gun honors in C flight were taken by Connie Gyde with a 63.
A week prior to the low gross, low flight net -- also at PGC -- the PWGA members locked Horns in an unusually formatted tournament in which scores on only those holes that started with a "T" or "F" were tallied.
Then, one-half handicap was subtracted. With a 34.5 Joyce Karnes won the A flight gold.
In B flight, Judy Neal finished at 29.5 to edge past runner-up Nancy Kisseberth for the crown. Kisseberth tallied a 34. Jeannie Griffin's 29.5 was good enough for C flight honors. Stringing together a 33, Nyberg was second.
Gyde claimed the D flight title carding a 30.
In closest-to-the-pin competition, Burns captured honors on No. 8 with a lie of 12 feet, 3 inches. Davis shot within 42 feet, 5 inches of No. 14 to earn the 19th hole celebration money.
