Fire Fuel Grant Received

The Christopher/Kohl's Fire District held its first organizational Firewise meeting May 13.

This Firewise District Steering Committee will help coordinate the individual homeowners associations or other groups from their own firewise committee, and will make decisions on community fire danger assessment and requests for money or assistance from the fuel reduction grant.

If you would like to become a member of the committee, contact Janice Templeton of Colcord Estates at (480) 966-0920 or (928) 478-4359, or Jerri Glover of C-Canyon at (928) 478-3544. They are hoping for at least one volunteer from each group within the district for the steering committee, and need each of the individual homeowners associations to start their own committee immediately.

If you'd like to start or become a member of your homeowners association firewise committee, please contact your president.

The Christopher/Kohl's Fire District has received a grant for fuel reduction within the district. This grant will cover approximately $100,000. They must clear approximately 680 acres before the end of the year.

If your group does not organize and wish to participate, the monies will be allocated to the groups that take an interest and organize volunteers, participate, and have their areas and properties assessed. Education and assistance is available to any group, but it must be stressed that time is of the essence because of the deadline.

If you have any questions, feel free to call Sam Seay at (928) 478-4403, or Lorraine Matthews at the fire department, (928) 478-4011.

Don't forget the Firebelles along with the Tonto Village Fire Sirens will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28 at the fire station.

Come out and support them, meet your neighbors and have a delicious breakfast. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee. Cost will be $4.50 for adults and $3 for children under 12. You will get to see our Fire Chief Ray Larsen flip the pancakes, along with Dave Ezzell at the helm. Then you can buy a freshly baked dessert to take home from the bake sale. Bake sale donations and help with the breakfast would be greatly appreciated. Call Sandy Kalmar at (928) 478-4774, or Karen Thorton at (928) 478-4133 to volunteer, or just bake something and drop it off that morning at the fire hall. It would be greatly appreciated.

Following the pancake breakfast at 10 a.m., stick around for the Christopher Creek Homeowners Association meeting. Agenda items will include firewise information and cleanup schedules. A representative from Caressive Mountain Homes Development will be on hand to answer questions about the project.

Winners of the ladies nine-ball tournament this week were Nancy Olson in first, coming in second was Kara Shaw, and third place goes to Marie Leonard.

Congratulations, ladies.
