Honors Abound For Payson's Graduates

Payson's graduates were honored with more than pomp and circumstance at graduation Saturday, May 21 at Longhorn Field.

Leading the list for special acknowledgement were Steen Baker, Martin Dorris, Fernando Galindo, Shaleen Holmes, Ben Leninger and Ben Tackett. These graduates made the commitment to join the armed forces of the United States of America.

Under the hot sun, many graduates like Rikki Ray wore sunglasses fit for a day of celebration. With hopes of a bright future, 170 Payson High School seniors took part in commencement exercises at Longhorn Field Saturday.

Scholarships were awarded to the following students:

  • Kyle Asmundson, University of Arizona President's Award for Excellence; $3,988 per year; and Arizona State University Provost Scholarship $6,000 per year; Payson Elks Lodge Student of the Year Award plaque and $50.
  • Karis Blalock, $2,400 Rusty Cooper Memorial Scholarship.
  • Thomas Borkowski, ASU Provost Scholarship $6,000 per year; the Kelvin Danielson Memorial Scholarship, $3,000. This scholarship in memory of Kelvin Danielson is being awarded to an outstanding student who has completed AP Physics. Although Dr. Danielson dedicated his life to Radiology and was founder of Rim Radiology here in Payson, his real love and passion was physics. It is the family's hope that with this scholarship, the recipient will have an opportunity to advance their studies in college.
  • Robert (Ryan) Buchanan, Payson Elks Lodge #2154 Scholarship, $800.
  • Casey Christensen, $2,400 Rusty Cooper Memorial Scholarship.
  • Jessica Coleman, Payson Elks Lodge #2154 Scholarship, $800; who is going into the dental hygienist field, is receiving a $500 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship.
  • Katie Ford, Southern Utah University Dance Department's Scholarship for $500 per semester.
  • Willa Frazer, Non-Resident Dean's Scholarship, University of Oregon $5,000 per year; National Merit Scholarship-Commended Student; Arizona Elks Association Scholarship for The Most Valued Student Award, $1,000; $1,000 Rim Country Kiwanis Scholarship.
  • Danielle Goebel, National Merit Scholarship-Commended Student; Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., Hermann R. Muelder Scholarship, $10,000 per year; Knox College Knox Founder's Scholarship,$1,000 per year.
  • Autumn Herrera, $1,000 Rim Country Rotary Career and Technical Education Scholarship.
  • Charlotte Hill, ASU Provost Scholarship $6,000 per year; Central Arizona Board of Realtors Scholarship, $1,000; who is going on to nursing school is receiving a $750 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship; $1,000 Rim Country Rotary Career and Technical Education Scholarship; $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarship.
  • Stephanie Hilliard, Discover Card Tribute Award $2,500; UofA Arizona National Merit Semifinalist Award, $8,000 per year; Payson Arizona Public Service Employee Scholarship, $1,000. -- Local APS employees contribute monies each payday to the Payson APS Employee Scholarship Foundation and each year an outstanding Payson High School graduate is selected to be awarded this scholarship. Payson Elks Lodge Student of the Year Award plaque and $50; Payson H.O.P.E.S. (Helpers of the Payson Elks) Scholarship, $500; who is going into Bio-Medical Research is receiving a $300 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship.
  • Andrew Hlavacek, $1,000 Gary Hardt Memorial Scholarship.
  • Haylee Huff, $1,000 Gary Hardt Memorial Scholarship; Payson Elks Lodge #2154 Scholarship, $800; who wants to be an anesthetist, is receiving a $300 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship; $1,000 Rim Country Rotary Career and Technical Education Scholarship.
  • Tina Jackson, The Phoenix Sun's Charities Scholarship for $1,000. and the Arizona Cactus Pine Girl Scout Council's Girl Scouts Gold Award for $1,000; who is going to become a doctor is receiving a $350 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship.
  • Amanda Korth, Northern Arizona University Blue & Gold Tuition Scholarship, $1,750 per year.
  • Candice Kraniak, Gila Community College Scholarship, $1,000.
  • Krista LaHaye, who would like to become a nurse, is receiving a $500 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship.
  • Nathan Lee, Wrestling Scholarship to Boise State University, Idaho, paying 90 percent of educational expenses, approximately $15,000 per year.
  • Retosha Marshall, Eastern Arizona College ASEAC, $1,148; who wants to be a radiologist is receiving a $300 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship; $2,400 Rusty Cooper Memorial Scholarship.
  • Krystal McRae, The Daughters of the Gila County Pioneers Pioneer Heritage Scholarship, $1,000.
  • Sarah Miles, Contractors of Northern Arizona Build a Future Scholarship, $500; Jack Reinhardt Memorial Scholarship, $500
  • Erik Monty, NAU Dean's Scholarship, $2,500 per year.
  • Morgan O'Haver, National Junior College Athletic Association Full Ride; Payson H.O.P.E.S. (Helpers of the Payson Elks) Most Improved Student, $50 and a plaque.
  • Britney Owens, $1,000 Gary Hardt Memorial Scholarship.
  • Warren Pitterle, ASU University Scholarship, $2,000 per year.
  • Katie Plumb, Rotary Club of Payson Scholarship, $1,000 per year for four years at the college or university of her choice.
  • Kyle Pugel, NAU Dean's Scholarship, $2,500 per year; $1,000 Central Arizona Board of Realtors Scholarship.
  • Mandy Randall, Foxworth-Galbraith American Values Scholarship, $1,000; $1,000 Gary Hardt Memorial Scholarship; Payson Elks Lodge #2154 Scholarship, $800; Greater Payson Moose Lodge #852 and Women of the Moose #2012 Scholarship; $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarship.
  • Brent Riepel, UofA President's Award for Excellence, $3,988 per year; who is going into pharmaceutical research, is receiving a $300 Mogollon Health Alliance scholarship.
  • Chrystal Riley, UofA President's Award for Excellence, $3,988 per year; $1,000 Rim Country Kiwanis Scholarship.
  • Crystal Sprinkle, UofA President's Award for Excellence, $3,988 per year; $1,000 Rim Country Kiwanis Scholarship.
  • Michael Stewart, NAU President's Scholarship, $3,750 per year.
  • Rebecca Stuart, ASU President's Scholarship, $7,000 per year.
  • Donnie Wilbanks, Football Scholarship to Mesa Community College, paying for tuition, books and fees, approximately $5,000 per year; $1,000 Gary Hardt Memorial Scholarship; Jack Morris Memorial Scholarship, $1,500.
  • Richard Tyler Williams, NAU Blue and Gold Tuition Scholarship, $1,750 per year.

All "per year" scholarships are renewable for 3 years if academic standards are maintained.
